History and present status of the Department
Understanding the importance of fisheries sector in food security, nutrition, employment generation, foreign exchange earnings and the economy of Bangladesh, Department of Fisheries has started its activities under the Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Dhaka from the academic year of 1997-1998. Since the commencement, the Department of Fisheries of the University of Dhaka is one of the leading Fisheries Institutes in Bangladesh. The department was established in 1998 with the vision of producing high-quality fisheries graduates. Presently the Department has more than two hundred undergraduate, masters, MPhil and PhD students and 23 faculty members. The Department has its own five-storey building named after the founder of the department Professor Mohammed Shafi Fisheries. It also has two premises at the Curzon Hall area of the university. It also has a Computer Lab, an Auditorium, indoor and outdoor aquaculture and fisheries research facilities and a seminar library.

The main goal of the Department is to produce quality fisheries graduates to encounter and solve the upcoming problems in fisheries sector resulting from climate change and increase the production of aquatic fisheries and non-fish organisms for the socio-economic development of the country through aquaculture. Another goal of the department is to conduct state-of-the-art research to meet the challenges of fisheries sector.

Every year the Department produces high-quality graduates who are employed in sectors. The Department has collaborations with other national institutes as well as institutes of foreign countries including Belgium, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, USA, and UK.

Vision
In the rapidly advancing world, it is important to identify the critical issues related to fisheries sector and to address and solve them using the modern technology to advance the fisheries sector. The vision of the department is to be recognized as an institute which addresses the needs of the country and the world in terms of food security and safety, employment and the environment through teaching and learning, research prioritizing the critical issues in aquaculture and fisheries sectors, sharing the knowledge with the rest of the world.

Mission
The Department of Fisheries of the University of Dhaka was built to produce quality graduates equipped with skills and experiences in different aspects of fisheries to play roles in fulfilling the growing demand for fish, the biggest source of animal protein. Over the last two decades, the department has achieved some of the goals as around 50 graduates are working as fisheries officers in the country who have proven their capabilities in their works with great impressions. Many of the graduates are also working in the field of research and teaching in fisheries sector and contributing to the development of this sector. Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in supplying fish for its people where our graduates have contributed a lot. The department is committed to produce more competent and reflective professionals to contribute in teaching and impactful research.
